First in the Family: How You Can Impact Retention of First-Generation College Students
Navigating the culture of college, from admissions, financial aid, and advising to academic scholarship, is like navigating a whole new world for first-generation college students (FGCS). This session will identify the unique challenges of FGCS and explore reasons why retention among this population is often lower than among their peers. You will have the opportunity to "meet" FGCS through video-recorded interviews and hear directly from them what they need from the college experience in order to be successful. This interactive, dynamic session will explore how the advising relationship impacts the experience, retention, and success of FGCS and provide you with strategies to bring back to your campus.

Winners of the MIACADA Best of Conference receive financial support and submission of their proposal to the NACADA Regional Conference.
